Slow Carb vs Fast Carb – Know what you eat

There are two types of Carbohydrate. Lets discuss about them in this page.

Slow Carbohydrate: Slow Carbohydrate is the one which breaks slowly and create energy at a regular speed.
Fast Carbohydrate :
Fast carbohydrate is the one which takes less time to break down the foods. They also produce energy very quickly.

If you are planning to lose fat, then slow carb is the one you have to look for. Let's discuss why.
Fast carbs break very fast and increase the sugar level in blood. When there is a rise in sugar level and body understands that it cannot take all the energy that is producing at a faster rate. So it secretes insulin, which will turn down speed the metabolism. Insulin also direct body to store those extra energy to store as fat cells, which is the last thing you want. Now which are the slow carb and which are the fast carb, you need to know.
Table sugar, sweet fruits, white pasta, white bread, white rice, fries and dessert are fast carb, while brown rice, wheat bread, salads and fruits ( not much sweet) are the slow carb.

Now how you can determine which carb you are eating?

Check whether you have much sugar in that carb. Sugar breaks very fast. If your carb contain good amount of sugar then it is one side of fast carb. Another thing is that if the food contains good amount of fiber, then it would not be a fast carb. Whole grain foods are rather very slow carbs. Wheat is originally is a slow carb. But when it is crushed in the mill, and cover is removed to contain only the white portion, it may look good, but it lose its fibrous structure. So it turns to a fast carb.

How to identify which carb you are eating ?

Many carbs are not as distinct as to be termed as fast or slow carb. They are sometime in between those two. There exists a index, glycemic index, which is really very helpful to identify a carb as fast or slow.

Glycemic index

Glycemic index is a ranking system which tell how fast or slow is a food containing carbohydrate comparing to pure glucose. Pure glucose is the fastest carbohydrate. So if glycemic index of a food is 90, it means this is 90% as fast as glucose. So the fast carbs are those which has a glycemic index of higher values. Low carbs are the one with loser values. So the scale of the index is from 1 to 100.

Glycemic Load - more important index

Though it is good to know Glycemic Index of a food before you eat it, but actually many cases glycemic load gives you better information of the food you are eating, where glycemic index may provide you misleading information. HOW ? Let me explain. Glycemic index actually means how fast the carbohydrate is. But if the food contain very less amount of carbohydrate then certainly effect will be very less. So when you see Glycemic index of a food is high, it is actually not Glycemic index of the food, it is GI of the carbohydrate of that food only. But Glycemic Load (GL) is calculated on per serving of that food. So if GL per serving is high, it will certainly effect your glucose level, if you take at least one serving. Start eating LOW GI foods

From now on you can start eating more fruits and vegetable. Also most of the legumes are low GI. Then always look for whole grain foods.
Most of the cases we take white bread or cereals in breakfast. These two are are high GI foods, so try to avoid them. Some cereals are low GI, if you have to eat cereals, check whether it is high GI or low GI.

Crackers, cookies, rolls or pastries - do we really need to eat them. They are all high GI foods. If you are seriously thinking about your health and looking for losing some weight off your body, avoid those foods.

Black Hawk Down

WAR for a common man is something that he/she gets to read in a newspaper every morning over their cup of tea/coffee.

WAR for a politician is nothing but to formulate a new domestic or foreign policy.

But what is WAR to the actual soldiers who are involved in it ???

Do they fight for a cause or do they die in vain ???

PLOT : " The film
depicts the Battle of Mogadishu ,a raid by the United States' effort to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid "

Black Hawk Down is based on the book of the same title by Mark Bowden ,there are some critizations from various quarters that the depiction of the battle was more biased towards only the sufferings & hardships that the US troops faced.

But whatever might be the case the audience will never forget the fact that whatever country the troops represented they had fought not for their country but for the man standing next to him
.

Ridley Scott ,the man who gave us the epic "Gladiator (2000)" delivers another masterpiece. His directional skills are evident throughout the film that runs for over 2 hours ,the film never ceases to amaze the audience on the issue at hand.

Screenplay by
Ken Nolan is very racy & at the same time provides enough characterizations for the numerous characters in the film ,we could easily relate to the emotional bond that each soldier has for his fellow comrade.

Casting for the film is done really well ,with an ensemble cast of actors the film makers had a huge burden to take care ,the burden is to give the actors enough screen space & i should hand it out to them for executing this work with flair.

Each & every cast had their task cut out for them which they had lapped up superbly ,their acting was seen as a healthy competition that at the end proved to work for the benefit of the film.

Cinematography by
Sławomir Idziak was something that greatly helped in the depiction of the battle sequences ,the color tone used ably pointed out the hardships faced by the soldiers.

This film won the oscar for best editing by
Pietro Scalia ,why am i not surprised. The editor held the tension level of the film together right from the first shot ,the plot flows well & is never let to loose focus.

If you have a home theatre then this surely is a film to showcase your audio setup ,the oscar winning sound for the film is evident with the various gun shots ,missiles & swirling helicopters.

The background score by Hans Zimmer & Denez Prigent is another feather in the cap for the entire team ,it captures the essence of the backdrop & couples it efficiently with the various emotional moments.

I liked the way the movie was presented ,it never questions the politics behind the battle but focuses sorely on the actual ground realities where every soldier is fighting for himself.

A conversation in the film goes like this "
Once that first bullet goes past your head, politics and all that shit just goes right out the window."

These lines hold true to those soldiers who risk their lives for their fellow comrades who stand by their oath to "
LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND".

  • Rating : "A" for intense war violence.
P.S : " 18 US soldiers died in the incident depicted in the film. The number of Somalis who died during the battle has been estimated between 500 and 2,000. "

Hiss Movie Review

The movie which was supposed to be a kind of re-launch pad for Mallika Sherawat has finally hit the screens much to the delight of the front-benchers as they have lot to cheer about in the movie as their favorite sex symbol goes full monty in the movie. However, for others who look for something more than just skin show this movie is a real dampener. Director Jennifer Lynch has made a mockery of what could have been made as a decent movie.

The primary aim of the director seems to have been riding on the sex-appeal of Mallika and to make matters worse the screenplay is as shoddy as it can get, the graphics are amateurish and finally the acting is no where to be even compared. It is a mystery how Mallika agreed to co-produce this movie and next is how come actors like Irrfan Khan and Divya Dutta decided to be a part of this debacle.

The movie is about a greedy American (Jeff Doucette) coming to India in search of Naagin. In his search for the treasure he captures the mate which angers the better half and seeking revenge the better half transforms itself into a woman (Mallika Sherawat). Now its upto the turn of Mallika to venture out in the society in search of her mate and what happens in the process is all about in this "Hiss". There are certain scenes which require viewers discretion as the murder sequences are too gory to watch.

Vikram (Irrfan Khan) comes a the police officer who has been deputed to crack this case. In the end what happens to everyone and who has the last laugh is portrayed in this 85 minutes long movie. Direcote Jennifer Lynch needs to get back to basics to make a film that will have an impact on the audience.

"Hiss" is nothing but a no-nonsense skin show by Mallika Sherawat.

Tips for filling fuel

ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening.... your litre is not exactly a litre.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE. If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low,
middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Random Harvest

How often have we seen a famous novel being butchered when adapted to a full length motion picture ????

Then are comes a glimpse of hope that these adaptions sometimes do serve their purpose ,many novels have become international sensations when they are made into movies. Most times the movie doesn't follow the book faithfully but takes some cinematic liberties which enhances or spoils the essence of the book.

And its the latter that prevails in most of the adaptations.

PLOT : " A woman's quest to restore the memories of her amnesiac husband who doesn't even remember being married. "

It was said that this novel was impossible to translate to a full length movie so to the creators made some changes to the script & dare i say that they have done an amazing job of it.

Random Harvest is a 1942 film based on the 1941 James Hilton novel of the same name ,the novel follows the life of a war veteran who looses his memory ,falls in love & again regains his older memories only to loose all his recent memories.

It then becomes a quest for his wife to make him regain his memory.I was fully engrossed in this film from the start till its gripping end even though i knew the plot before ,its the treatment meted out to the screenplay that has made this possible.

Directed by
Mervyn LeRoy with screenplay by Claudine West, George Froeschel and Arthur Wimperis ,this movie stands testimonial to quality writers resourcefulness & a director's magic touch.

"Old is Gold" ,this stands true to yesteryear classics that still looks fresh even after decades. These kind of films makes me even a stauncher believer that its the scripts that are always evergreen.

Taking no credit away from the two lead actors of
Ronald Colman & Greer Garson who have should i say made hay with their meaty roles.

Greer Garson ,WOW i still could remember those mesmerizing eyes ,she was outstanding in her role of a lover torn between two lives ,her stunning beauty was ever so visible even though the film being in Black & White.

Ronald Colman was not far behind ,his performance of an amnesiac patient is something to look out for ,his attitude ,his expressions during various stages of the film was very convincing.

This film is also one of the rare cases when a single film sweeps the awards ,it deserved each & everyone of the seven oscar awards it won.

Books & Movies are a great source of information & inspiration but when these two work hand in hand then we sure are provided with a dazzling spectacle.

Random Harvest surely is an evidence of it ,the adaptation of a Book to Screen coupled with creative & quality writing is sure to weave its magic even after decades.

  • Rating : "U"
P.S : " Greer Garson , whose performance was well-received, was ineligible for the Academy Award for Best Actress, as she had already been nominated that year for her role in Mrs. Miniver which earned her an oscar. "

Videocon launches Android at 12900 INR

Videocon has just launched an Android 2.1-based full-touch phone, the Zeus, and further extended its portfolio, by introducing four other phones as well.

Providing full access to the Android Market, the Videocon Zeus (V7500) also comes with a whole bunch of preloaded applications as well as an 8GB microSD card, all at a rather attractive price of Rs. 12,900. At that price, you can't help but compare it to the LG Optimus GT540, another Android full-touch phone that was released just over a month ago, priced at Rs. 12,990. The GT540 currently however is based on Android 1.6, though it will support an upgrade to Android 2.1.

The Zeus ships with 2.1, and is powered by a 600MHz Qualcomm processor. Other specifications include a 3.2-inch multi-touch screen, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, and push mail. The other four phones have sketchy details, and no prices.

Relieve yourself to run your car

We have been hearing about fuel cells for quite a long time and we know that cars running fuel cells (made of hydrogen) are already a reality.

Now Chemistry World reports that the catalyst could not only fuel the hydrogen-powered cars of the future, but could also help clean up municipal wastewater.
Gerardine Botte of Ohio University uses an electrolytic approach to produce hydrogen from urine - the most abundant waste on Earth - at a fraction of the cost of producing hydrogen from water.

Urine's major constituent is urea, which incorporates four hydrogen atoms per molecule - importantly, less tightly bonded than the hydrogen atoms in water molecules.

Botte uses electrolysis to break the molecule apart, developing an inexpensive new nickel-based electrode to selectively and efficiently oxidise the urea. To break the molecule down, a voltage of 0.37V needs to be applied across the cell - much less than the 1.23V needed to split water.

Her work is described in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Chemical Communications.

“During the electrochemical process the urea gets adsorbed on to the nickel electrode surface, which passes the electrons needed to break up the molecule,” Botte told Chemistry World.

Botte believes the technology could be easily scaled-up to generate hydrogen while cleaning up the effluent from sewage plants. “We do not need to reinvent the wheel as there are already electrolysers being used in different applications.”

Apple to Launch iPhone in India

Apple is holding discussions with Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices about bringing an iPhone using CDMA, or code division multiple access technology, to India, the newspaper said.

An iPhone based on another mobile standard, GSM, or global system for mobile communications, is already available in India through the operators Bharti AirTel and Vodafone Essar, a unit of Vodafone Group.

The report that a CDMA-based iPhone could be coming to India comes just days after the Journal said Apple plans to make a CDMA version of its iPhone that Verizon Wireless will begin selling early next year in the United States.

AT&T, which uses GSM technology, has been the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the United States since the touchscreen smartphone was launched in 2007.

"Tata has been in talks with them (Apple) for four to five months now," the Journal quoted a "person familiar with the negotiations" as saying.

The Journal said launching a CDMA phone in India would give Apple access to more customers in the world's fastest growing telecom market, which is adding around 18 million users a month.

It said roughly 20 percent of India's 670 million wireless users have CDMA phones.

Daryl Chiam, a senior analyst at research firm Canalys, told the Journal that Apple accounted for less than one percent of India's smartphone market share in the first half of 2010.

Forrest Gump

More often than not we have the tendency to complain about everything or most things life throws at us.Whatever it might be , for example a promotion is a moment of joy but as time goes on we curse the grueling shifts & wonder as to why life's treating us so badly.

Is this how we behave ,are we all the same ????

Do we overlook what life has given us all the time for the things we don't have ????

PLOT : " The chronicles of the life of Forrest Gump. "

" The World will never be the same once you've seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump "

The above tagline was used for the movie's promotion ,these lines i should say were coined for perfectly that gelled very well with the film.

Forrest Gump
is a 1994 film based on the
1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom ,the film is said to have to have many differences to the novel but this was one such film which truly captivated me such that thought of reading the novel has never yet occurred to me.

T
he film was directed by
Robert Zemeckis who is well known as the director of the time-travel Back to the Future movie series. He has provided us with one of the beautiful works of the 20th century that will stand testament to the genre of drama.

Screenplay by
Eric Roth whose works speaks about his talents is well remembered for this film because of the emotional content which the movie sustained from the very start to very end.

This film is one of the many films which made
Tom Hanks as a household name ,the title role of Forrest Gump enacted by him is & will be one of cinema's memorable role.He literally carried the entire movie that fetched him the oscar for best actor.

The other cast of
Robin Wright Penn ,Gary Sinise ,Mykelti Williamson and Sally Field blended into their roles perfectly ,all of them added their contribution or should i say made the film a classic.

Music by
Alan Silvestri added further strength to the emotional drama producing the right chord at the right times.

For a film with a duration of 140 odd minutes it was very essential that the plot never lost focus ,editing by
Arthur Schmidt ensured that the movie's pace held the audience's attention.

Cinematography Don Burgess was a perfect sync with the various timelines that the movie progressed ,the director had effectively used his team to bring out the best out of them.

Looking at the various stages of life of Forrest Gump its very easy to relate to our daily lives where we meet people who do things which are so called impossible ,these people overcome their hardships and look at the millions of things life has offered to them.

These are the people who teach us that life is not about what we have its about what we make out of it ,everyone doesn't have everything ,there's always somethings life will never give us for free.

  • Rating : "PG" for war violence.
P.S : " Bill Murray, John Travolta and Chevy Chase turned down the role of Forrest Gump. "

Endhiran Movie Review

The costliest film ever made in Tamil cinema has finally seen the light of the day. The movie which has been in the making for close to three years is nothing short of a visual extravaganza. The only disappointment though is that in terms of story there is nothing great to boast off. This movie is definitely a landmark film in Tamil cinema but it is not the best Tamil film till date. The major talking point of the movie is the computer graphics that occupies the last 25 minutes of the film which leaves the audience in awe.

The movie is not a trademark Rajnikanth's movie but it has the trademark of Shankar written all over it. The introduction scene of Rajnikant is subdued and the movie is sans any punch dialog from the superstar. The movie begins with Dr. Vaseegaran (Rajnikanth) giving final touches to his dream project of making a Robot so that it can serve in the Indian Army. The Robot is names as Chiti (Rajnikanth). When Vaseegaran tries to give a demo to the approving authorities a road block is created by Professor Bohra (Danny Denzongpa) who incidentally happens to be his guru and is jealous that his student has succeeded in making a Robot.

Sana (Aishwarya Rai) plays the love interest of Vaseegaran in the movie and to be honest Aishwarya Rai looks more fresh and energetic compared to her appearance in Raavanan. Vaseegaran makes some fine tunning to Chiti and thats when problem starts for everyone as Chiti falls madly in love with Sana. Enraged by this Vaseegaran disowns Chiti but fate has other plans as Chiti lands in the hands of Bohra who converts him into a bad Robot.

The fun and action begins here and what follows is an entertaining fare for the viewers. The movie is no doubt a treat to the ardent fans of Rajnikanth but for others who step into the theatre with expectations it is a slight disappointment. In terms of acting Rajnikanth as Chiti scores full points. Aishwarya Rai and danny Denzongpa are mediocre in their roles.

Karunas and Santhanam who are supposed to provide the comedy track are used just as extras. The locales at which the songs are picturized is a visual treat. A R Rahman who tuned in hit numbers for the film has made sure that his background score ups the tempo of the movie. Editing by Anthony is slick and the action sequences by Peter Hein sets the pulse racing.

The simple storyline is well treated by Shankar but there are many loop holes in the screenplay which is overlooked. The only aim of the maker is to have a Rajni Vs Rajni duel and the duel has surprised everyone. The movie has a running time of close to 3 hours and it sure to reap in box-office returns.

"Endhiran" a must watch for Rajni fans and others can watch it for the scintillating computer graphics.
