ZooZoo: The New Brand “Endorser” for Vodafone

Some interesting facts about the VODAFONE ADS in the TV.....

No, they aren't animated characters. They are human beings who were made to wear body suits . "The design of the characters is such that one gets fooled into thinking it is animation," shrugs Rao, which was indeed the very illusion that had to be created. "In a sense, it is 'live' animation!" he quips, referring to the fact that it was all shot live.

Prakash Varma, ad filmmaker, Nirvana Films, has directed the commercials, and reveals that the Zoozoos were a big challenge to create. The practical aspects of how they will move, talk, gesticulate and emote were very important. Essentially, costume design and artwork were crucial elements.
"It took me three weeks of pre-production to understand how it will work," says Varma. There were two fabrics that were considered for the body suits, and one was rejected for it had too many wrinkles and was shiny. The wrinkles would have shown when the characters moved, thereby shattering the illusion of animation. "So we chose the more practical, thicker fabric," Varma explains.
The production team divided the outfit into two parts: the body and the head. The body part of the outfit was stuffed with foam in some places, while the head was attached separately. To make it look bigger than a human head, a harder material called Perspex was used, which in turn was stuffed with foam (with scope for ventilation).

If one wishes to understand the size of this head, here's a fact: a human head would typically reach up to the mouth level of this giant Zoozoo head. "We kept the hands and legs thin, which is why we cast women – and occasionally children – wearing the costumes," says Varma. The thin limbs, contrasted with big bellies and a bulbous head, all add to the illusion that these creatures are 'smaller' than humans. Sets were created to suit the size of the Zoozoos.

Cinematically, this 'size' was a trick: the creatures look smaller than they actually are on screen, to portray a different world of sorts. For this, the speed of shooting was altered: Nirvana shot it in a high-speed format to make them look the size that they do.

Furthermore, simple sets/backdrops were created and spray painted with neutral Greys – a colour of choice so that attention isn't diverted from the main characters. For a supposedly 'outdoor' shot, even the shadow of a Zoozoo was kept 'live' and not done in post production: it was painted in a darker shade of grey on the ground. An even lighting was maintained throughout.
There was virtually no post production work done.

The films were shot by Nirvana in Cape Town, South Africa, with the help of a local production house there, called Platypus. Incidentally, the same combination of people also worked on the 'Happy to Help' series last year. When asked whether Cape Town is fast becoming a tourist spot for Vodafone and Nirvana, Varma laughs, saying, "Oh no! It's just that we are very comfortable with the team there and know what sort of work to expect from them."

Nagpal adds here that the production cost had to be minimal for unveiling such a large number of commercials. "Otherwise, our production costs would exceed media spends," he quips.

Mariyathai Movie Review - A Weak Family Drama

The successful pair of Vikraman-Vijayakanth are back again to re-create the "Vaanathai Pola" magic in Amma creations "Mariyathai" (Respect). On the outset we get a slight doubt if its going to be on the same lines of their previous super hit basis the publicity posters and the plot in which the hero plays the charecter of both father and son.
Annamalai (Father Vijayakanth) a very rich man has a very good family in his wife Alamelu (Ambika), Piccha (Vijayakanth) and his daughter. Piccha does not like his name and he himself changes his name to Raja and he finds great support in his father who gives him the freedom to purusue his dreams and for no reason he is being scolded by his father and instead he is always co-operative to his efforts.
Years later we find Annamalai and his family living in a small house in the outskirts and we wonder what has happened to the man who was respected by the entire village. Chandra (Meera Jasmine) comes from city to village to be with Annamalai and his family.Chandra a very jovial girl gets along with everyone except Raja. Her attempts to be in sync with Raja proves futile and she wants to know why is this person so rigid and she takes it as a challenge to change him.

When she comes to know of the reason why Raja is so rigid she really feels for him for the mishap that has happened to him and that one incident changed the world upside down for Annamalai's family. It so happened that Raja a very helpful guy in nature get to meet Radha (Meena) and after a few meetings they fall in love with each other and with the elders blessings decide to get married.

Raja then finds that Radha is in trouble days before their marriage by virtue of a loan that her father had got from a local money-lender and Raja comes to her rescue by signing a document that he will be responsible for the money. On the day of marriage Radha and her family do not turn up and at the same time they get to know that their land of 150 acres is being fenced by another person. Annamalai and Raja then get the shock of their lives when they come to know that Radha has cheated them and had got the land transferred from Raja's name to another person.

Chandra then tries ways and means to bring Annamalai's family to the position which they were before and by doing so she gets caught and she reveals her true identity and her only motive was to help Annamalai's family. Whether she gets to do so and what happens to Meena and the bad guys is what this "Mariyathai" is all about.
Vijayakanth in dual-role has performed well though we can hardly differentiate between the father and son by their make-up except for a few strands of grey hair for the older Vijayakanth.
Meera Jasmine fits in the charecter assigned to her perfectly. Meena as the girl staying in Pollachi looks too stylish with her straightened hair and her overdose of make-up.Ambika is in her suttle best and Ramesh Kanna as the helpful person in the family provides the comedy element. Sampath, Shanmugarajan and others who are part of the bad guys are not that effective. Actors like Nasser and Nizhalgal ravi are wasted in miniscule roles.

Director Vikraman has come out with a movie that does not captivate the audience much on the whole.

No need for proof to claim LTA, conveyance

NEW DELHI: Employers, while assessing the conveyance and leave & travel allowance (LTA) claims of their staff, are under no statutory obligation to collect supporting evidence and furnish them to tax authorities, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday.

A bench comprising Justice SH Kapadia and Justice Aftab Alam said that assessee employers are under no statutory obligation to collect bills and details to prove that the employees had utilised the amounts obtained against these claims on travel and related expenses.

According to prevailing rules, if claims on LTA and conveyance are not supported by journey bills, they would be taxed. For instance, on an LTA allowance of Rs 1 lakh, if documentary proof such as air tickets, taxi vouchers and other public transport bills are submitted only for Rs 50,000, then tax is applicable on the rest of the amount.

Regardless of the amount an executive is entitled to as LTA, tax laws allow air tickets only in the domestic sector for the claim.

The apex court order came in a plea by companies including Larsen &Toubro and ITI. In its defence, the revenue department had argued that assessee companies were under statutory obligation under Income Tax Act, 1961, and relevant rules, to collect documentary proof to show that their employee(s) had actually utilised the amount paid towards the leave travel concession and conveyance allowance.

Rejecting the plea, the court in its order said: “The beneficiary of exemption under Section 10(5) (of the Income Tax Act) is an individual employee. There is no circular of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) requiring the employer under Section 192 to collect and examine the supporting evidence to the declaration to be submitted by an employee(s).”

Disclaimer: Please note the SC Judgment is not enough to provide any advice or guidance to the clients on this issue until the same is being transformed in to circulars and published in official gazette.

Ayan Movie Review - Old Wine In A New Bottle

Sun Pictures "Ayan" which has Surya and Tamannaah in the lead has nothing new to offer it is the same old story of gang wars and this time around the war happens with the backdrop as smuggling business. Director K.V.Anand after his successful "Kana Kandein" was expected to come up with a story line that was refreshing but in the end he has failed miserably especially in the screenplay and execution of the same.

Deva (Surya) is introduced as a high-class foreign return guy only to find out that he is part of a pirated CD business headed by Doss (Prabhu who fits into this role with perfection) and he is returning with a pirated copy of a yet-to-be-released movie which is then duplicated at a local computer centre with the help of henchmen like Dilli (Karunas).

The officials sniff something wrong and come to the computer centre and deva decides to surrender before the police where he is saved by a stranger Chitti (Jagan) who admits to the crime and later Chitti and Deva become friends and they go in unison to all the dealings carried out on behalf of Doss and thats where we get to know that they are into organised smuggling trade of diamonds.

Doss is averse to only one thing that is drugs. When Dilli brings in a customer to smuggle drugs doss gets wild and rejects the deal. At the same time in the market there is a rival gang headed by Kamlesh (Debutant Akashdeep Saigal) who wants to be the king-pin of the smuggling business and his main enemy is Doss.

Deva then gets to meet Yamuna (Tamannaah) who happens to be Chitti's sister and doing her B.Pharm final year (she hardly has a scene where she goes to college) and they instantly fall in love with each other.

When all goes smooth and we wonder whats the twist in the tale the director brings in the surprise element which has been well planned and later there is a tragedy that occurs and which fuels the enemity between Deva and Kamlesh which is shown in the rest of the movie.

The movie begins at a very brisk pace but fails to keep up the momentum within minutes into the movie. Tamannaah has got nothing major to do in a movie that revolves entirely around Surya. Renuka as Surya's mother is totally wasted in the role and the same can be said of Kalai Rani who comes as a brothel owner.

Ponnvannan as the customs officer has come out with a mature performance. Music by Harris Jeyaraj disappoints as a whole. Cinematographer M S Prabhu has done a commendable job and he has captured the natural beauty of Tanzania in style. Editor Anthony has tried his level best to make this movie a complete mass entertainer in which he has been unsucessful.

On the whole "Ayan" is nothing but Old Wine In A Brand New Bottle which fails to kindle any interest amongst the masses.
